Temporary warehouse for Alcon
Challenge
Alcon is a global leader in eye care. With over 75 years of experience, Alcon is the largest eye care equipment company in the world. The Custom Pak division creates sterile packs for eye surgeries, custom-made for surgeons, including items such as blades, scissors, sutures, surgical drapes, gloves, and more. The warehouse where these pharmaceutical products are prepared before being repackaged in clean rooms is currently under renovation. As a result, Alcon required a temporary warehouse and turned to Veldeman for assistance.
Solution
To optimize the limited available space and ensure smooth truck access, two halls measuring 5m x 15m and 10m x 35m were constructed side by side. The combination of sandwich panels and a thermal roof increased the insulation value, meeting the critical requirement for a stable internal climate. This was further supported by a tailored heating and cooling system. The floor needed to be suitable for pallet jack traffic, so we reinforced it with additional load-bearing capacity. Another challenge was the steeply sloping terrain, which required bridging a height difference of nearly 1 meter—this was achieved with an additional elevation system. Both halls were connected to the adjacent permanent building via passageways. We provided a complete solution including lighting, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and more. Alcon will be using the temporary warehouse space for at least one year.
