During the Christmas period, cities are transformed by lights and attractions. Christmas illuminations are put up, squares are transformed into Christmas markets and temporary covered ice rinks are an attraction for young and old. The holidays are over now and we have a chance to look back at one of our most fun projects, the Gentse Winterfeesten.
Five years of Gentse Winterfeesten
2018 was the fifth year in a row that Veldeman had a presence in the centre of Ghent during the Gentse Winterfeesten. This is a winter event that takes place for four weeks in three squares in the city. There are all sorts of hospitality facilities, the typical wooden chalets where you can buy Christmas goodies or something tasty to eat and a temporary covered ice rink.
Every inch utilized
From an organisational point of view, the Gentse Winterfeesten presented some major challenges. Everything was measured down to the last inch and all areas were made full use of. For these winter festivities, proper preparation is a must!
Aluminium halls for all applications
Every year we erect a number of aluminium halls at the Gentse Winterfeesten. Each one has their own specific purpose, and we have to deal with a number of challenges. For example, the Sint Baafsplein has a large statue in the middle of a fountain and we installed a large aluminium hall here. It was difficult but not impossible. The hall provides a place for several small, wooden chalets that offer liquid refreshments.
At the Emile Braunplein visitors could enjoy the temporary covered ice rink. We did not actually cover the ice rink because it was under Ghent city pavilion. We did lay the floor that was raised one metre, on which the ice rink was installed. This was a major undertaking as the ice rink had to be fully levelled of course. As well as the temporary covered ice rink, we also provided the aluminium hall for the ice-skates rental facilities and another one that housed the Moose bar, a really hip-happening refreshment tent.
The Gentse Winterfeesten are all about a cosy ambiance. We carried this idea through in the finish of our constructions. We designed and developed special wooden thermowood side panels for a number of the tents. These top-quality wooden panels really gave the tents and the whole project a special Christmassy feel.
